Winslow: a fast gap analysis that got the board engaged on climate reporting

Winslow needed to report under Australia’s mandatory climate disclosure rules, but the work was struggling to get traction. A quick gap analysis, presented to the board, gave leadership a clear view of what was involved. Winslow is now on track to publish its first climate disclosure on time.

The Winslow Group is an Australian-owned civil construction company based in Melbourne. It delivers roads, bridges, rail and utilities projects, along with subdivisions and land remediation.

The challenge

Winslow is required to report under Australia's mandatory climate disclosure rules (AASB S2). Dean Lal, Group Systems and Compliance Manager, knew the work needed to start. Like many businesses, Winslow had a lot competing for attention at board and executive level. Without their support, Dean couldn't get the time, budget or people to move it forward.

Dean Lal, Group Systems and Compliance Manager, knew the work needed to start. Like many businesses, Winslow had a lot competing for attention at board and executive level. Without their support, Dean couldn't get the time, budget or people to move it forward.

We had suggested a gap analysis several times as a practical first step. In late February, Dean saw an opening. If Tadpole could deliver one quickly, he could take it to the executive team and get us in front of the board the following week.

What we did

We completed the gap analysis on an expedited timeframe. It showed where Winslow stood against the AASB S2 requirements, where the main gaps were, and what it would take to close them.

A week later, we presented the findings to the board with Dean.

The outcome

The gap analysis gave the board and executive team a clear view of what was required and how much work was involved. That was the turning point. With the task properly understood, Winslow allocated the right people and resources and got on with it.

Winslow is now finalising its first climate disclosure. It is on track for board and audit approval, and for publication within the required deadline at the end of October.

Why it worked

  • We moved fast enough to catch the board cycle.

  • The findings were in plain language and focused on what the board needed to decide.

  • We backed Dean as the internal champion, rather than working around him.

"I knew we needed to get moving on climate reporting, but it was hard to get traction internally. Tadpole turned the gap analysis around quickly when the window opened, and presenting it to the board made all the difference. Once the board and executive could see the scale of what was required, we were able to put the right resources in place and get on with it."
